2015 Update from California Massage Therapy Council (CAMTC)

We recently received a letter from CAMTC stating that the bill to continue CAMTC has been signed by the Governor and will become law effective January 1, 2015. AB 1147 changes the educational requirements for certification. Applications for certification as a Certified Massage Practitioner will not be accepted on or after 1/1/2015, applications for certification as a Certified Massage Therapist MUST HAVE 500 HOURS of education and have PASSED A CAMTC approved exam.

As of 1/1/2015, CMPs who want to upgrade to CMT will need all 500 hours of education to be completed at approved schools. As of this date, CAMTC will no longer have the authority to apply continuing education hours toward certification.

In addition as of 1/1/2015, all applicants will need to have passed one of the CAMTC approved exams, in order to qualify for certification as a CMT or upgrade to CMT. Currently, the following exams are CAMTC approved: the Massage and Bodywork Licensing Exam (MBLEx); the National Certification Exam for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCETMB); and the National Certification Exam for Therapeutic Massage (NCETM). If a request to upgrade to CMT is received in 2014, and the applicant has already taken and passed one of these exams, under current law the upgrade applicant may be upgraded without having to meet additional educational requirements.

CMPs may re-certify every two years and will not be required to meet the new educational requirements, as long as they do not allow their certification to lapse for 6 months or more. Those whose certifications do lapse for 6 months or longer will be treated as new applicants upon re-application and must meet the current certification requirements existing at the time of the application is received. in 2015, all new applicants will be required to have 500 hours of education from approved massage schools and pass a CAMTC approved exam.
